Tideswell Open Arts: The Show Will Go On Sat-Sun 24-25th May, The Institute
A group of Tideswell artists has decided to go it alone after this year’s disappointing cancellation of the popular Derbyshire Open Arts. The event is an annual showcase for artists and makers throughout the county that brings visitors from all over the UK.
The Tideswell artists first participated in the Derbyshire Open Arts in 2024 and were bowled over by their success. 2025 saw an even larger footfall and fantastic feedback from visitors. The group were already eagerly preparing for the 2026 show when they heard that the event would not be going ahead. Undaunted, they decided they owed it to themselves to exhibit their work anyway.
The 2026 Tideswell Open Arts group is broad in scope and rich in talent. Sally, is a successful and established jeweller creating original pieces in gold, silver and precious gemstones, informed by the organic rock-formations of the Peak District. Jenn is a mixed-media artist and printmaker who explores the traces of human habitation through layers and patterns in the landscape. Jane’s striking abstract works explore how paint can be manipulated to create a sense of place with colour and texture. Hollie’s detailed, playful illustrations in pen and ink and mixed media, capture rural life and beautifully observed animals. Yasmina’s work reflects an experimental approach to painting, drawing and collage around her theme of “visionary archaeology”. Rachel is a potter who throws useful objects – mugs, jugs and bowls – and glazes them with an earthy palette often using the unpredictable techniques of wood and reduction firing. Mandy creates her work using recycled materials. She paints, constructs, sews, knits and crochets, combining these elements into her sculptures, paintings, soft furnishings, bags and experimental upholstery. Val’s work focuses on attractive local scenes – the church, the stunning views, the shops and streets – all painted in delicate detail with oils and acrylics.
Tideswell Open Arts will be selling tea, coffee and homemade cakes to raise funds for Friends of St John the Baptist and for St John’s Institute to fund essential works on these beautiful listed buildings.
